Watch Julian Schnabel’s “Basquiat” (1996 Biopic) After Listening To Jay-Z’s “Magna Carta Holy Grail”

If you’ve been listening to Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail, wondering about that Jean-Michel guy he name-checks about a thousand times throughout, I highly suggest watching the 1996 biopic based on the graffitist’s life.  Helmed by fellow rival painter and The Diving Bell And The Butterfly director Julian Schnabel, the aptly-titled Basquiat showcases a career-best performance from the chameleonic Jeffrey Wright.  The unbelievably stacked cast also features David Bowie (as Andy Warhol, no less), Benicio Del Toro, Michael Wincott, Dennis Hopper, Claire Forlani, Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, Willem Dafoe, Parker Posey, Tatum O’Neal, Vincent Gallo, Sam Rockwell, and Courtney Love as Madonna.

I truly have no idea how this film has slipped by the wayside over the years when by-the-numbers biographies continue to get Oscar nominations, but I promise you won’t be disappointed.  Criterion really ought to dust this one off and give it a Blu-Ray re-master.  I wonder if Jay-Z’s even seen it.
